Halloween is upon us, and I have always loved this spooky little holiday. I do like things a little dark and spooky, although toned down for my daughter now, it's more silly (she was a cat for pre-school today and spent most of the morning on the floor rubbing up against my leg and meowing).

But I still love it. I like any excuse to dress up and be a little silly, and watch movies and have snacks and be cosy in a dimly lit room, under a warm blanket cuddled on the sofa. Which is exactly what I plan to do today.

I have recently been wanting to learn more about the meanings of Halloween, of spirits and magic, the paranormal. I am hoping to get some books, and research a little, as it has always interested me, but I have never really had the focus to actually look into it, but I am hoping now that I have got past a lot of the mental blocks I put up in my brain, I can actually try and learn something.

I know many people think it to be all "woo-woo", and maybe it is, but we all believe in something, that to others is "woo-woo", but I am open to this idea, and would like to investigate further. I am not religious, I have never really held anything to that standard of belief where there is one almighty being or spirit guiding our lives. But I am open to the idea of karma, and the cosmos providing what you need, if you are able to see it and grab it. I think I have been a good person, and despite the troubles, my life is pretty great, I just couldn't see it before.

If there is anything else beyond our realm of existence, I hope it's calm and freeing. I hope it isn't lonely or scary being on the other side looking in, no one knowing you're there. I hope it's merely a window into a life that is no longer yours, but can be appreciated and admired without anger, or resentment. And for those who do feel they were robbed of life too soon, or perhaps karma hasn't rewarded them in their time on earth, maybe they do twist and distort into more evil entities who cause chaos like in the movies.

There's also the concept of "the devil" and "demons". Non-human entities who thrive on tormenting those around them, making them crazy and perhaps even force them to act against their will. I know there are a few stories about this kind of thing happening and it's of course attributed to poor mental health, and I have to say I would agree, but I do believe that the people themselves truly believe that, they're not lying, or trying to deceive. I think they are sincere, but suffering from a very problematic mental condition.

However, if it were ever proven that such things exist (although unlikely to be able to prove such a thing!) then of course it would not be far fetched to believe they could control you and force your hand, no?

I hope to get some books or find some good research online (if I can filter past all the sensationalised stuff that will do anything for clicks) and see what is out there. What the reality of all this "ghost stuff" is, and where the stories came from, real life experiences, not dramatised stories for movies or TV. The real stuff is certainly not as entertaining, but I'll bet it's interesting.
